Fall Exhibit Opening

The Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History will be opening two new exhibits “How Dry Was It? Prohibition in Stillwater and Inside the Fallout Shelter: Civil Defense in Stillwater.  A reception with refreshments will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday September 21st. The opening event is free to the public.

How Dry Was It? Prohibition in Stillwater will guide visitors from the Territorial Period through today, as they explore Oklahoma’s’ prohibition past and what new laws could mean for the future. Come find out what prohibition really meant to the people of Stillwater and Payne County.  This exhibit will present both sides of the issues and will show how controversial and yet trivial the debate became.

Inside the Fallout Shelter: Civil Defense in Stillwater will take visitors inside a mock Cold War Shelter. They will get to see exactly what type of provisions were inside and how long they could survive.  They will also learn about Stillwater’s role as a training grounds for Civil Defense education and how these preparations compare to disaster preparedness today.

The exhibits will remain on display until August of 2018.  The Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History is open to the public free of charge Tuesdays through Fridays from 11-5 and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4.
